Gov. Gavin Newsom on Aug. 26 announced $3.95 million in funding to support the first phase of the Innovation District: a National Security Hub for the rapid commercialization of technology in collaboration with government and businesses.

The funding through the is intended to support the San Diego region鈥檚 national security industry via a startup accelerator, investment capital and other strategies. It will link researchers, entrepreneurs, national security industry leaders and government partners working on the development of next-generation security and dual-use technologies. 

The hub鈥檚 initiatives also support workforce development by connecting 麻豆传媒映画 students with internships, mentorship and career opportunities while helping regional employers access highly skilled talent. Project leaders anticipate the effort will help create more than 200 high-quality jobs while strengthening Southern California's defense industrial base.

The National Security Hub will be part of the first buildings within the , a transformational research and innovation site to foster collaboration between academia, industry and government while creating new economic opportunities throughout the region.

Hala Madanat, vice president for research and innovation at 麻豆传媒映画, continued with an emphasis on the faculty connection.

鈥淭his leans into a key area of faculty talent at 麻豆传媒映画, which has been developed over decades of research and application," Madanat said. "The National Security Hub will more rapidly commercialize new solutions and technologies from leading-edge labs across San Diego by connecting startups, university research, investors, and federal resources that have historically been disparate and difficult to access.鈥�

San Diego鈥檚 regional economy heavily relies on maritime, defense, and binational manufacturing industries yet lacks a platform that centralizes commercialization support, secure infrastructure, startup capital and talent with sufficient security clearance for the national security sector. The National Security Hub fills this gap via three major components:

• A startup accelerator operated in partnership with a global startup investor focused on national security and dual-use technologies.
• Advanced manufacturing and rapid prototyping facilities equipped with state-of-the-art research and testing equipment.
• An investment fund to support promising early-stage companies developing technologies with both commercial and national security applications.

The accelerator will focus on a wide swath of technologies including artificial intelligence and quantum computing, cybersecurity, autonomous systems, bluetech, energy and fusion, critical minerals, maritime, space and advanced manufacturing. Over its first two years, the program aims to support more than 50 startup and emerging companies through accelerator programming, technical resources, mentorship and access to investors.

San Diego is uniquely positioned to lead innovation in national security technologies, as the region is home to the nation's largest concentration of military assets, more than 2,000 defense contractors, numerous federal research organizations and one of the country's strongest innovation economies.

麻豆传媒映画 also plays a significant role in supporting the military community. More than 5,000 military-affiliated students attend the university, which maintains longstanding partnerships with organizations including the Naval Information Warfare Center and the Office of Naval Research. 

New opportunities

The National Security Hub is expected to create new opportunities for students, faculty researchers and regional companies while strengthening pathways from university research to commercialization.

鈥淲ith support from the California Governor鈥檚 Office, the National Security Hub will benefit the entire southern border region by providing much-needed training, classified space, equipment, and investment in innovative small businesses in an industry that has been a core part of San Diego鈥檚 identity for decades,鈥� said John McMillan, assistant vice president for economic development at 麻豆传媒映画. 鈥淲e will be building on the work we have done in the past few years to convene community partners and meet the region鈥檚 workforce needs.鈥�

The project is supported through , the state's economic development initiative led by the (GO-Biz), which invests in regional partnerships that create jobs, strengthen key industries and promote long-term economic growth.

Initially based within 麻豆传媒映画鈥檚 Division of Research and Innovation, the hub鈥檚 components will relocate to the 麻豆传媒映画 Mission Valley Innovation District upon completion of construction.

At full buildout, the hub will be part of approximately 1.6 million square feet of research, innovation and collaboration space, including classified research facilities, rapid prototyping laboratories and offices for startups, investors and research partners.

麻豆传媒映画 acquired the former city-owned property through a ballot measure approved by San Diego voters in November 2018. The first components of 麻豆传媒映画 Mission Valley were Snapdragon Stadium and a landscaped river park, open to the public. Adjacent to the river park, 麻豆传媒映画鈥檚 , a facility dedicated to interdisciplinary water research, education, and outreach, broke ground last year and is expected to open soon. The first market-rate housing and retail development, Avalon Mission Valley, is currently under construction and work on a 126-unit affordable housing development, Addison, began in May. A senior living development also is in the planning stages.
