The San Diego State softball team will play Arizona State in the NCAA Los Angeles Regional, the NCAA announced Sunday. It is the 15th NCAA tournament bid for the Mountain West tournament champion Aztecs (37-17) and fourth straight under fourth-year head coach Stacey Nuveman Deniz.

Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³», which earned an automatic bid to the tournament after winning its third straight Mountain West tournament over the weekend, will play the Sun Devils (35-19) at 7 p.m. PT Friday at Easton Stadium in Los Angeles on the campus of No. 9/10 UCLA (49-10), the tournament's No. 9 overall seed. The Big West Tournament champion UC Santa Barbara (34-24) is the other team in the double-elimination regional.

The entire NCAA Los Angeles Regional will be broadcast live on ESPN Networks with San Diego State and Arizona State playing on ESPN 2.

San Diego State, which also made the tournament in 2001, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2022, 2023 and 2024, is 22-28 all-time at the NCAA championship.

The Aztecs are playing in Los Angeles for the eighth time out of their 15 appearances in a NCAA regional (also 2001, 2006, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2023 and 2024), owning a 13-12 record at Easton Stadium. Last season, the Aztecs dropped both games in the Regional, falling 5-1 to No. 15/17 [2] Virginia Tech and 9-7 to [4] Grand Canyon.

San Diego State is the only team to make the NCAA tournament from the Mountain West.

Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» is battling the Sun Devils for the fifth time in the NCAA Tournament, matching its most games played against any team (UCLA). The other times that San Diego State played Arizona State came in Tempe in 2009, 2011 and twice in 2022, all wins for ASU. The Aztecs also played in the Tempe Regional in 2013 and 2014.

During the season, the Aztecs faced both UCLA and UC Santa Barbara. Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» blanked the Gauchos 4-0 on February 22 as part of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, California. San Diego State came up short in a 5-0 loss to then No. 6/6 UCLA at Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» Softball Stadium on March 8.

This year's national tournament features 64 teams, with four squads participating at 16 regional sites in a double-elimination tournament. The regional winners will advance to super regional competition for a best-of-three series from May 16-18 at eight campus sites. The remaining eight teams will advance to the Women's College World Series (WCWS), an eight-team, double-elimination tournament with the championship final being a best-of-three series. The WCWS will be conducted May 29-June 5/6 at the Devon Park in Oklahoma City.
